Change in Telephone Numbers

All telephone numbers in Costa Rica have changed!!  The new number prefixes the old numbers with a 2 in the case of fixed lines and with an 8 in the case of mobile lines.   Thus, all 787-xxxx numbers are now 2-787-xxxx and mobiles numbers such as 361-yyyy and 840-zzzz are now 8-361-yyyy and 8-840-zzzz.

Low Cost International Telephone Service

There is now a low cost service for international telephone calls.  Calls to the States are about 5 cents per minute.  To subscribe, call 2220-4590.  You will need a reference number; use 6481738213.    As part of the subscription process, they will have you deposit a nominal amount, say $20.00, into their account at Banco Nacional #100-02-102-600118-1, in the name of La Fragata Verde.  You then call them back with the deposit number, your account number with them (which they will assign you, along with a PIN number) and the amount.   To make a call to the States, you dial 2296-4742 or 2290-9647.  When the machine answers, you press 1 "for English" then enter your account code, then your PIN and then you are free to dial.  The response system will tell you how much is in your account and how much time you have left to make the current call.  Then as you decrement your balance to a low value, they will ask you to again add to the credit.
